Building ZeroShift: a modern Dots and Boxes game
Dots and Boxes is simple enough to learn in a minute. Here is how ZeroShift keeps those rules and still makes every match feel new.

Most of us played Dots and Boxes on the back of a notebook. The rules take a minute to learn: take turns drawing a line between two dots, and if your line completes a box, you claim it and move again. That last rule is what makes the game deep, because one move can set off a chain of boxes.
ZeroShift keeps those rules and builds a modern mobile game around them. It is live on Google Play.

Keep the rules, change the board
Players already know the classic game, so the rules stay exactly as they remember. What changes is the board:
- Board sizes from 3 x 3 to 6 x 6. Small boards give a quick two minute game. Large boards give room for long chains and real planning
- Shifting grid layouts, so the same opening does not work every time
- Power ups that can swing a match when used at the right moment
- Dynamic scoring that rewards timing, not only the number of boxes
The goal was simple: a new player should feel at home on the first move, and an experienced player should still find something to plan around.
Chain reactions are the heart of it
Completing a box gives you another turn. On a crowded board that can mean five or six boxes in a row. Most of the strategy is about the third side of a box: leave one open and your opponent may take the whole chain. Watching the remaining open sides and deciding when to sacrifice a box is what separates a good player from a lucky one.
Many ways to play
- Against the computer, for practice or a quick game
- With a friend on one phone, passing it across the table
- Online, with rooms you can refresh and reconnect to
- Nearby, over Wi-Fi only, with no Bluetooth or location permission
Computer and local games work fully offline, so the game is just as good on a bus with no signal.
Small things that matter
Touch and drag controls are tuned for thumbs, not a mouse. Colourful themes unlock as you play, and match history and stats show how you are improving. Coin gifts and account updates arrive as soon as the game opens, instead of waiting for a restart.
Privacy by default
ZeroShift's Google Play data safety listing declares no data collected and none shared with third parties. For a casual game, that keeps the store listing honest and the game easy to trust.
